River Eels

Some details of eel reproduction are as yet unknown, and the discovery of major eel spawning grounds in the Sargasso Sea is one of the more famous anecdotes in the history of Ichthyology.

Only a couple of bootlaces this season on pellet, last season i had one of 3.5lbs caught on a huge lump of pepperami from the lower, that is the biggest i've ever caught on the avon, in fact it's the biggest eel i've ever had, didn't half scrap as well, went back alive and well, at least they behave a bit better on the bank rather than the little snottys... :)

Have had two of a similar size this summer on the BA. Think I had 3 last year. They all tend to be around 2.5 to 3lbs and seem very keen on pellets.

Hi

I have had two so far this season the HA on pellets. One approx 1lb and the other was quite chunky approx 3lb.

catching eels all over! in fact i would go so far as to say if you want a 2lb to 4lb eel go to anywhere on the ba and fish with pelletts or worms and you will catch some bloody big eels (got as picture of one on my iphone caught tuesday and its big! how do you upload iphone photos?) im going to try tidal avon at and below conham later in year, if you want BIG BIG eels bristol docks should be your destination i stopped pike fishing it years ago because of eels picking up deadbaits, it needs the attention of a big eel specialist
(im postponing learning the art of big eel fishing for as long as poss im not a fan of eels)

Looking at the above posts regarding the sizes of eels quoted, I'd be intersted in how many weights are estimated.

I remember being staggered by just how big an eel looks when compared to it's actual weight - the first eel I ever bothered to weigh went 2.5lbs when I thought it must go 4lbs.

The only 4lb (weighed) eel I've actually seen looked huge - I'd have guessed half that again!

I witnessed a big eel caught from the BA as a kid. And I kid you not it was massive they estimated it at 7lb but I would say it was well over five if not indeed a seven. Unfortunately it was dead and in a sack ready to be taken home to eat. I would say it had to be the record BA fish then and probably still now I was awestruck!
