Hook Size

As a new comer to the world of barbel fishing I would like to ask some advice on hook size. Is there any relationship between bait and hook size? I read that a size 8 hook is good for 14mm boillies and size 6 hook is good for 16-18mm boillies , does this sound about right? Any advice much appreciated.
