New Greys Prodigy Range

Hi all,

Anyone had a waggle on the new Greys Prodigy TX or VX range? Was going to get the Specimen twin-tip (1.5/2lb) but looks like these have been superceded this year (Veals can't get them anyway). The TXs are a fair bit cheaper than the old Specimen's, but not sure if it's the same blank quality, whilst the twin-tip VX's cost considerably more.

Online reviews for these are a bit thin on the ground so I'd appreciate your comments if you own either.

Cheers

Ox

Too many horrow story's involving Greys for my liking, I myself had an Xflite snap twice before i got a refund, it seems to be common with both there barbel and carp range

I havent looked at the new versions yet, but it looks like Hinders in Swindon have the old specimen rods in stock if you do want one...

Wouldnt entertain Greys,as Mark stated they are prone to snaping, not that i have had a greys barbel rod,but i did have a set of Greys Prodigy SX carp rods and one snapped on me,I swear by my Harrison Torrix TE Specials for my carp fishing i also belive the Harrison Torrix barbel blank is of top quality and one of if not the best rod,as i have only recently started barbel angling im useing an old Drennan Legermaster and i find it a nice enough rod to use,However i am planning on buying myself 2 new barbel rods for next season not sure what yet as the funds are a littel tight and the torrix blanks are 240+ a pop i dont think i could afford them with out selling my Torrix carp rods an thats never gunna happen. So could any one recomend a quality barbel rod suitabel for the river Taff, the wye, severn ,trent and the Avon for around £100 - £150 each without recomending greys pleas guys, many thanks Matt

Hi all,
I would recommend a Daiwa barbel rod all day long.
I have been using there Probarbel since 2002 its had many double barbel up to 13lb plus many large chub and even some nice still water carp floater fishing.
I have been bought a Whisker 1.75tc for crimbo and the finish is superb (only down side is I can't use it till boxing day)
and with Daiwa's logo rebranding this years model are going for much less than £160 and that from shops not the net.
It's a shame there is no where we could rent rods from just to try them out as a fishing rod is a very personal thing and we all have different tastes.

very true rich, rods are very personal. i have the old greys prodigy 1.5/2lb tips and i do like them ish, they have a nice finish and handle fish really well, but i have never felt them to be balanced right, i know that sounds odd. and dificult to explain, but they just dont feel right in the hand. to be honest as well i wanted the 2lb tip for heavy flood fishing as i couldnt afford a ' better ' thought of rod for the job eg a peregrine, or the lovely rods bob used to/does ( sorry dont know if he still does) make.
ps the greys arent mouse proof and one has eaten quarter of the butt sectionof my greys. i used to quite like the mice in my shed, not after that, they had to die. i dont like killing as a rulebut they had to go and i set two traps and had 18 of the things!
regards paul

Cheers for the replies chaps. In the end I got a cracking deal on a Drennan Specimen Barbel rod - the 1 3/4 lb version. Used it all season and it's a proper work-horse of a rod. It's steadfastly remained "Ox-proof" having lobbed massive feeders out into the Wye, been bent double on underwater shopping trolleys, been bashed against trees and even managed a Boris or two :D

All,
A ringing endorsement indeed!!
If any item of tackle has been certified 'Ox proof' then trust me, it is a very very durable item!!! ;) ;)
And also, but not necessarily, fireproof!!

Hi all,
I know what you mean Paul (Runhunt) four years ago I got a Fox barbel specialist but found it was horrible.
It felt really sloppy even with 6lb bream on it, though oddly it seemed to feel a bit better with a hard fighting chub on but even so I had no confidence in the rod (even though I'm sure it was perfectly good) I had one barbel on it then reverted back to my Daiwa.
Just shows once you get some thing in your head you can't shift it!
