How do you guys fish the paste

Today I tried a paste that I had got back in the summer and even though I was getting plenty of bites and I had the rod in my hands at all time I just couldn't connect to a fish.
I tried changing the hooks size from a 8 to a 7 and even shorting the hook length to around 6-8" but still couldn't connect.
I was wondering if you guys can give me some advice here.
The paste was going straight to the hook which was a drennan barbel size 7 and 8.
