Max casting weight - 1.75 test curve

Postby chrisfishy » 19 Jun 2013 07:48

Hi all.

Just bought a new barbel rod, the JW Young travel barbel one.
Does anyone have any knowledge of this particular rod? What I'm most keen to learn is the max casting weight. It's a 1.75 test curve, so I'm wondering if say 3oz is the maximum casting weight. I'm not sure it will hold up to lobbing 4oz weights into the BA on a fully flooded river (when the time comes).

Does anyone else use a rod with a 1.75 TC and what is the maximum weight they are prepared to cast out?

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris,

I have 1.75lb Fox rod and I use in floods with weights up to 4oz. I only ever swing casts out underarm into the near 1/3 of the river and reckon that if you are careful this weight will do no harm.

As a travel rod, presumably it breaks down into 4/5 sections - I don't know what impact this will have on the overall strength of the rod. However Youngs are a reputable make and hopefully you can trust it to be well-made!

Good luck,

Simon
